Privacy issues are a concern for many people that use phones, tablets and the internet. In recent years there have been many privacy breaches and some including Facebook. Lock down privacy!
There have been all sorts of leaks ranging from private photos of celebrities to user information being sold to third parties, such as Facebook says data leak hits 87 million users and Unsecured Facebook databases leak data of 419 million users.
Privacy is not just about data leaks and it is also about preventing people and companies from tracking your activities as you browse the web or use social media services, not sharing your name, age, phone number, location, hobbies and interests with all and sundry.
What can we do to protect our privacy on our phones, especially when it comes to Facebook and other services?
Jumbo is a great privacy app that is available for Android phones and the iPhone and it is a huge help when it comes to locking down Facebook. Mark Zuckerberg's app has so many settings that have an impact on privacy that it can be hard to find them all and configure them, but Jumbo can find them for you.
Scan your Facebook account with Jumbo
Run Jumbo app on an Android phone (it runs on iOS too) and it first asks you a few general questions about security and privacy. Then it asks permission to connect to your Facebook account.
Once it has access, it scans the things you share and the information you make public to see if you are over-sharing anything. Most likely you are and it presents a list of cards with a privacy issue on each one. For security reasons, Jumbo will not allow screenshots, so I had to take a photo of the screen:

Use Jumbo to help set Facebook privacy settings
With each privacy issue, there is an Ignore button and one to fix it, like Delete, Stop Tracking, Protect Data and so on. It has things like whether your email address is visible to everyone, whether friends can see your religious and political views, your romantic interests, whether friends can see your friends list and many more settings.
Basically, every Facebook privacy setting is listed and you can choose either to allow something or block it. Some things you might want to allow, like allowing friends to see what others post on your timeline, letting people add tags to your posts and so on.
.
Who can see your Facebook information?
Jumbo can help you to find and delete old posts and old conversations. Over time, they may become irrelevant or things may have changed, like getting married - you might not want posts of or about previous partners, jobs and other things for example.
Even if you think you have your Facebook privacy settings correctly configured, there may be some things you have missed and Jumbo highlights them and lets you change them.
It isn't just for Facebook and more than a dozen services are supported, like Twitter, Google, Amazon, YouTube, Alexa and others. Not all of them can be configured for free, but quite a few can. Jumbo is recommended.
Manually configure Facebook privacy
The Android and iOS apps are very similar in terms of features, with just minor interface differences, so let's look at manually configuring Facebook privacy options.
Tap the hamburger menu in the top right corner in Facebook for Android or the Facebook button on an iPhone. Expand the Settings & Privacy section and there are several places where privacy features can be found.
Privacy Shortcuts is a good place to start and it is divided into sections like Privacy, Ad preferences, and Your Facebook information. In some places it is not obvious that text is actually a link that can be pressed, so tap everything and in each section are one or more subsections and these may also have subsections. Keep tapping on items to drill down to the settings.
.
There are dozens of Facebook privacy settings
There are dozens of settings and too many to list here, but here are a few to look out for: Control face recognition, Manage your location settings, Who can see future posts, Limit who can see past posts, Who can see your stories. Check your profile information, such as who can see your phone number, email, birthday, city you live in and so on. Set them to Only me for the best privacy or at least Friends, now friends of friends or public.
.
Check these sections in Facebook settings for privacy
In addition to the Privacy shortcuts section of Settings & Privacy, go to Settings and swipe up to get to the Privacy section. Open each item and thoroughly check all the options and make sure you are happy with what you are sharing.
Also go to the Security section and look at each of the items, especially Apps and websites, and Business integrations - websites and services you have used Facebook to log into. Remove any you do not use or need.
