Too many jobs these days require us to sit at desks all day and rarely move or get any exercise. Whether you work in an office or at home, take time to practice yoga with these iPhone apps.
The fitness and health sections of the app stores for iOS and Android are extensive and cover a wide range of topics. There are lots of Yoga apps and it is hard to choose the right one, so I look at three here.
Yoga is great for helping you to relax and relieve stress. It helps you build strength and improves your flexibility. One of the great things about yoga is that you can do it almost anywhere and no equipment is required. You just need a bit of space to stretch and bend.
This makes it an ideal exercise to perform at home if you are working from home or after a long day at work, whether it is an office or someplace else.
Daily Yoga: Workout & Fitness
Price: Free | By: Daily Yoga Culture Technology | Size: 105MB | iOS: 10.0 or later
Daily Yoga: Workout & Fitness is highly rated in the iOS App Store. It is a free iPhone app that contains some free content, with the option to buy more if you choose to. It aims to improve your health, fitness, suppleness and general well-being using a series of exercises.
There is so much in this app, I found the interface and access to all the content a bit confusing. There are so many yoga courses, plans and lessons, it is hard to know where to start. There is a featured section at the top of the home screen with its own toolbar - Fundamentals, Audios (and music for meditation), Poses and Target (with subsections for Tone Up, Health Enhancer, Stress Relief, Flexibility Improvement and more).
Below the featured content are popular collections of yoga courses and plans, like Flat Abs Challenges for Beginners, Yoga Basics for Beginners, Energizing Morning Flow, Easy Office Yoga, Core Strengthening and many more. At the bottom of the screen is another toolbar with erven more yoga course.
There are simple 20 minute yoga guides up to two week courses with daily sessions. Choose a session or a course and the poses in the current session are listed. It shows the duration and the number of calories you are likely to burn. As you work through the poses, a video shows exactly what to do, how to do it. An on-screen countdown timer shows when to start, how long to do it and how long to relax for between poses. An audio commentary describes what to do too.
In addition to the yoga sessions and programs, there is a community and a number of articles and forums where you can post comments and read what everyone else is chatting about. You can also add friends.
Daily Yoga is a brilliant app and there is sufficient free content to last you quite some time. Prices vary and discounts are available and the website offers the cheapest subscription, working out at US $3.33 a month when paid yearly (UK £4.08/month in-app purchase). There is an eye-watering one-off fee of $199 for lifetime membership, which is too much for me.
Yoga for Beginners | Mind+Body
Price: Free | By: Fast Builder Ltd | Size: 118MB | iOS: 10.0 or later
Yoga for Beginners is a free iPhone app, really free and you get 16 yoga sessions for nothing and no adverts. It is a beautifully designed app and the home screen lists all the sessions, and to give you an idea of what is available, there is Bedtime Yoga, Beginner Yoga, Butt Toner, Core Blast, Fat Burner, Morning Yoga and several more.
Select a session and the time required is shown, which can be from 7 to 1 minutes, and the calories burnt. A yoga routine consists of many poses and they are all listed along with an illustration showing them.
They can be previewed and this shows a text description and a video with voice commentary explaining it. Start a session and you are guided through it with an animated illustration, countdown timer for poses with rest sessions in between. Pause, forward and back buttons enable you to stop or jump forward or back.
Some people might feel that there isn't enough content with just 16 sessions, but I like the simplicity and the design. It is clear and easy to use, it tracks when you perform a session on a calendar and counts current and best streaks, and it tracks and charts your weight if you choose to enter it. This is an excellent app, especially for beginners. Get it, it's free.
Simple Yoga - Fitness Trainer
Price: Free | By: Daily Workout Apps | Size: 113MB | iOS: 10.0 or later
Simply Yoga is a free app with a small ad at the bottom of the screen. What immediately struck me was how dull the presentation is. The home screen is mostly black empty space, couldn't there be a nice image of someone doing yoga?
Across the top is a time selector and 20, 40 and 60 minute sessions are available. There are two levels, but only level one is available in this free app. These 20, 40, and 60 minute sessions are built by selecting from a collection of 30+ poses, 16 for a 20 minute session rising to 23 for a 60 minute session.
You can start at the beginning and work through to the end or select any pose and jump forwards or backwards. A video with commentary shows exactly what to do with each pose, so you just follow what is onscreen.
To my eyes, this app is visually dull and doesn't really encourage you to join in. The yoga is OK, but it could be presented so much better. The Pro version of the app costing US $14.99 provides double the number of poses and two levels of sessions, but with the same presentation.
