The iPhone Today screen is a great place to put a weather forecast and you can see with a couple of swipes what to expect for the next few days. Here are some top Today weather widgets.
Wake the iPhone and swipe right or when using the the iPhone, pull down from the top and swipe right to enter the Today screen. It is a place where widgets can show useful information from apps and there is a great collection of widgets bundled with iOS. There is even a weather widget.
If you don't have a weather widget on the Today screen already, swipe to get to the bottom and tap Edit. Find Weather and tap the green plus button to add it. Press Done at the top and take a look.
The default weather widget in iOS works well and it shows useful information, but do you really want a Today screen that is identical to millions of other people's? There are more interesting and exciting weather widgets available in the App Store that enable you to customise the Today screen to make your iPhone stand out from the crowd. Be different, get an alternative weather widget. Here are some you might like to try.
Weather Widget - Unique styles
Price: Free | By: Tien Long Nguyen | Size: 56MB | iOS: 8.1 or later
Weather Widget is not one widget, but a collection of them and there are many to choose from. The app is free and there are several free widgets, plus more that can be purchased.. A couple of free ones are fairly plain, but access to some more interesting ones are available if you are willing to share a link on Facebook. The really exciting and most interesting ones require payment of $0.99 to $1.99.
The example above shows one of the free widgets and it is graphically much more interesting than Apple's weather widget. There is an image showing the current weather, the temperature, wind speed, and chance of rain. There are also icons showing the forecast for the next few days and below them are high and low temperatures. The units can be customised in setting, for example, Fahrenheit or Celsius, miles or kilometers, and so on.
There are around 25 different graphical widget styles. Some of them are animated and some follow themes or events like Halloween and Christmas. There are many great ones that look fantastic on the Today screen. The downside is that the information displayed is not as detailed as some widgets and it could be better. However, the widgets do look good. This app is for people that want something visually exciting.
Simple Weather Widget
Price: Free | By: Back Bay Bytes LLC | Size: 14MB | iOS: 8.0 or later
Simple Weather Widget packs in a lot of information into a small space. What you see in the screenshot is just one variation of the widget and there are many customisation options. There are minimal and detailed views, and simple and details forecasts. There can be hourly, daily, split or both types of forecast, and all the units can be selected, like Fahrenheit or Celsius and so on. Some features must be paid for, but as you can see from the screenshot, you get a great widget for free.
This forecast widget is obviously for people that like lots of detailed information. The hour by hour forecast with icons and temperatures shows exactly what you need to know if you are heading out for the day or evening and you can see if you will need a coat and umbrella or sunglasses and sunblock.
This is an excellent widget and it is one of my favourites. It shows more detailed information than Apple's Weather widget and is recommended.
Weather Widget Lite
Price: Free | By: Trond Rossvoll | Size: 56MB | iOS: 9.0 or later
Weather Widget Lite takes up a large part of the screen, but it looks fantastic and is packed with useful information. The screenshot is showing the expanded view and tapping Show Less displays just the top part of the widget, the area above the chart, so it can be compact if you prefer.
The expanded widget shows the weather coming up over the next few hours in the clearest manner possible. How could it be simpler? The line shows the changing temperature and at every hour is a symbol showing the predicted weather at that time. You know exactly when the sun will be out and when it will most likely rain. This is great.
Along the bottom of the widget is a moni forecast for the rest of the week that shows temperatures, weather symbols, amount of rainfall and wind speed. Brilliant!
Everything you see in the screenshot is free, but there are even more features for a small in-app purchase. I am happy with the free features though. This is my favorite weather widgets and it is recommended.
