In a blog post,
Moving to a Plugin-Free Web, Oracle has announced the end of the Java plugin for web browsers. Well, the beginning of the end anyway. Too many websites still rely on Java for various things, but the number is dwindling and fewer people are installing Java on their computers.
There are better ways of implementing features and functions on websites these days and the Java plugin is outdated. It is also a source of security flaws too. Your computer, phone and tablet is more secure without it, so announcing the end is a good thing.
Java itself isn't a bad thing and it is used in millions or billions of devices, it's just not useful as a web browser plugin. Lots of things run Java and you just don't notice, so it's not going away any time soon. It's just evolving into something better.
