Bad science reporting hurts

There is a lot of bad science reporting in the press and on the web. I was listening to a science podcast recently about whether fat in your diet is good or bad for you. A few years ago experts was said that fat was bad, now they say it is supposed to be good after all. As with a lot of things, it is a lot more complicated than that and misreporting of the subject has caused the confusion. It isn't that scientists changed their minds, it was just bad reporting.

Sometimes the press and websites just want to sensationalise stories to get readers or clicks. Take one very small step on the long road towards understanding cancer and the newspapers report that the cure for cancer has been found, for example.

Sometimes science stories are inaccurate, sometimes they are just plain wrong. You should read A disease of scienceyness which looks at the effect of bad reporting of science. Because of bad publicity some science projects are shunned by scientists and funding is withdrawn.
