macOS update adds the one feature we have all been waiting for
Apple can be very slow to add obvious features sometimes, but at last, one I have wanted for years has been added to Safari and you can now sort your website bookmarks!
It is a tiny feature and it surely could not have been difficult to add to the browser, but for some reason it has never been in Safari before. Now it is in macOS 10.13.4.
After many upgrades to macOS and Safari, after importing bookmarks from various other browsers and even from Windows computers, my bookmarks were a mess. Now they can be sorted at last.
There are two types of website bookmark in Safari and there are those that appear on the Bookmarks menu and those that appear on the Favourites page. Go to Bookmarks > Show Favorites to see bookmarks displayed as large and attractive icons on their own page.
Both the items on the Bookmarks menu and the Favorites page can now be sorted. Select Bookmarks > Edit Bookmarks. There should be two folders, one for each type of bookmark. Open either of the folders to view the bookmarks.
Drag and drop
If you only need to move one or two bookmarks from one position to another, open Bookmarks Menu or Favorites and click and drag a bookmark up or down the list to move it. A horizontal blue bar shows where it will be inserted when you let go of the mouse button.
Sort folder contents
A sort option has been added to the folder context menu. Ctrl+click Bookmarks Menu or Favorites and select Sort By, then either Name or Address. The contents are sorted.
It is not possible to select a bunch of bookmarks and sort them, only folders can be sorted. If the Bookmarks menu contains folders, Ctrl+click them and the bookmark contents can be sorted.
Sort in the sidebar
Click the button in the Safari toolbar to open the sidebar and then click the Bookmarks tab to show the bookmarks (the same ones as on the Bookmarks menu). Any folder can be Ctrl+clicked in order to sort the bookmarks they contain.
There is another interesting feature in the Bookmarks sidebar. Click a bookmark and Safari opens the website. However, if you click and hold, eventually the bookmark name becomes editable.
More new features in Safari include pressing Command+9 to jump to the last browser tab that is open. A warning is displayed if you try to enter passwords or credit card information in non-https websites because they are not secure.
New macOS desktop wallpapers
All the bookmarking features above were introduced in the macOS 10.13.4 update and there are a few other features hidden in the update, such as new desktop wallpaper.
Open System Preferences, select Desktop & Screen Saver, select the Desktop tab and scroll down to the bottom of the wallpaper icons. Check out the new wallpaper. The blue clouds is from the iMac Pro apparently.
It makes a change from the default macOS desktop wallpaper and it looks great!
