Run cpu performance tests using Winsat
Have you used the Windows System Assessment Tools recently? What, you've never heard of it? It isn't surprising because this is a hidden utility on the disk drive and it is not on the Start menu or in the Control Panel. Winsat.exe is a utility that can be found in the C:\Windows\System32 folder and it can be used to measure the performance of different components in the PC and to measure how fast they are. Perhaps it is used silenty in the background by the Windows Experience Index in System in the Control Panel. You can use it from the command line.
Click Start, All Programs, Accessories and then right click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. The Command Prompt window opens and it is ready for you to start entering commands.
Try this one: winsat cpu -encryption which tests the processor's ability to encrypt data. My budget PC which isn't that fast took a total of 11.64 seconds and achieved 157.91Mb/s, how did yours do?
You can replace -encryption with -compression to see how fast it can compress data. You can also use -encryption2 with -compression2 tun run alternative tests. Compare yor results with your friends to see how your PC compares.
By adding an extra parameter to the command line you can view a whole lot of information about the processor. Enter: winsat cpu -encryption -v where the -v stands for verbose.
